Sinning In LA Takes A Look Back At Lucent Dossier’s Hollywood Experience
For those of us that have never been fortunate enough to be able to embrace the awesome spectacle that is Burning Man, we tend to scour the City of Angels looking for something to stretch our collective artistic horizons. Fortunately, the imaginations of the fine folks of Lucent Dossier have been uniting the LA underground with their post-apocalyptic performance art. We attempted to capture all the craziness from their recent residency at H.Wood, and to bring in to focus both the past and the future.
While this normally celebrity-filled haven would seem to be a far cry from the counter-culture denizens that usually attend Lucent Dossier’s or their sister company, The Do Lab’s events, when I spoke with one of the founding members for both tribes, Dream, she offered her take on the time spent at H.Wood.
“Well, it was very challenging for us,” she laughed. “A lot of the issue was just the space itself because we didn’t have a stage, so that was a little bit difficult for us. I feel like there’s also a learning curve too, for this sort of new way of coming together or celebration that’s different from what’s normally happening in Hollywood.”
Our own Smash LeFunk, who has braved many a Burning Man battle in his days (and also been a big supporter of Lucent Dossier) was there and his photos capture a club where two worlds collided but left some scratching their heads, what with all the all the roaming fire dancers, contortionists, bearded ladies and of course the avant-garde sounds of the Lucent Tribal Orchestra floating around.
The Lucent Dossier crowd is in to a much more open-minded, loving and accepting way of being.
She then added, “Though I believe Hollywood is very much ready for it, I think the learning curve is a little bit longer than we might have anticipated. It’s something I think will take some time for them to kind of grasp on to. Being collectively with people who are different from you and accepting their differences and celebrating them is not something that Hollywood is accustomed to. I just think it will take some time for that crowd to realize that ‘wow, what an epic way to be with other human beings and rejoice in difference and celebrate it,’ and really let go of all the fear that surrounds the Hollywood scene now.”
But for Dream, she knows the while it may take a minute for the trendy tides of the posh Hollywood scene to turn, that’s only one small part of the movement, and their love for Lucent Dossier and The Do Lab has culminated in the annual Lucent L’Amour Festival, which The Do Lab puts on.
But with Lucent L’Amour, Lucent Dossier and The Do Lab, we do admit to getting a little perplexed and puzzled by all these aliases, but Dream finally set the record straight for us once and for all.
“Well I think the best way to break them all down is to say that we’re actually all one,” she explained. “We’re all coming from the same clique, and it’s a part of one big huge community. We’re all friends, we help each other out, we all work together, so it’s definitely a collective of people who are all charged about similar concepts and ideas.”
Last year’s Lucent L’Amour was a huge success and featured the sinful sounds of Adam Freeland and Z-Trip. For this year’s party, they’ve enlisted two more of our favorites with The Stanton Warriors, Bassnectar and Beats Antique all providing the soundtrack alongside Lucent Dossier’s new show too.
“We’re really excited,” Dream said. "We always do something really special and we have a really awesome show that we’re planning and we’ve been rehearsing like mad getting it ready, creating costumes, so we’re super excited about this year’s festival!”
Their new show involves sounds created especially for this festival from former member of The Glitch Mob, Kraddy, who worked with Chris Komashko to create a sound that has Dream feeling downright giddy.
“Kraddy is an amazing composer,” she told us.
I’m really excited to see how everything comes together with the sound and visuals, so it should be really hot!
But before the crew returns to their roots, they first will continue their tradition of being the only alternative thing left about the Grammy Awards, as Lucent Dossier will be performing with the Black Eyed Peas for their pre-awards party and then they will also perform backstage during the actual show itself.
“It’s awesome, I love it and we’re definitely we’re going to promote Lucent L’Amour like crazy while we’re there,” she laughed. “The VIP section is bigger than the general admission! The whole event is invitation only but the VIP section is humongous. Rihanna here, a Jay-Z there, it’s mental!”
But while the Grammy’s offer more of the other side of the scene, Dream knows that the core of what makes Lucent Dossier and The Do Lab excel is the loyal following they’ve amassed over the latter part of the last decade and it’s something that she promises will always be the main fixture for the collective.
“We have some exciting stuff planned for the spring, like Lightning In A Bottle (another fabulous festival), and we’re working on a new residency, so lots of great stuff coming.”
We’re already looking forward to partnering up with them to bring you all the best from Lucent L’Amour and we pledge to continue to team up with them as long as they continue to expand minds and unite the souls of the city in ways that only they can.
